A mutt is couture-it’s the only one like it in the world, made especially for you.
Isaac Mizrahi
Forget about purebred dogs. On this day, National Mutt Day, mixed breeds and mutts are what it’s all about!
History of National Mutt Day
Although the word “mutt” can sometimes have a negative connotation in the English language, it simply means that the dog’s parents were not registered and were not both of the same breed.
Other terms for this might be “mixed breed”. This truly has no bearing on the quality of the dog because mutts can still make amazing pets!
In fact, sometimes mixed breed dogs will have some of the positive qualities of the breeds of each of their parents, making them delightful in all of the best ways. Sometimes it can be obvious by looking at certain mutts what breeds their parents were, but other times they may have a conglomeration of characteristics.
Animal welfare advocate and behaviorist, Colleen Paige, is the founder of National Mutt Day. In a desire to encourage love for any and all animals, Paige started this day in an effort to raise awareness about the problem of mixed breed dogs who are often abandoned.
How to Celebrate National Mutt Day
Enjoying the celebration of National Mutt Day can be super simple and bring a great deal of joy to the lives of families and their mutts! Consider some of these ideas for observing the day:
Treat Your Mutt
Owners of mutts can have an especially fun time today, playing with, hugging, and enjoying their family dog.
Buy that pup a special toy at the pet store or take him to the dog bakery and pick out a special treat. Or take her to the pet groomer and get her some special bows for her ears!
This is also a great time to remember to schedule a time for your mutt to visit the veterinarian. Adult dogs need to see the vet once a year to make sure they are happy and healthy.
Adopt a Mutt
People who don’t have a mutt might want to consider National Mutt Day as the perfect opportunity to get one.
Animal shelters are the perfect place to find a mutt that simply needs a good home. Mutts can come in all shapes and sizes, from large mixes of Labrador and Chow breeds, to tiny little blends of Chihuahua with a Dachshund.
It may take a few visits to the shelter over time to find a dog that is the right fit for the family, but when it comes home, a little (or big!) mutt will soon become a beloved member of the family.
Volunteer at an Animal Shelter
Those who might not be ready for dog ownership yet but still enjoy hanging out with mutts might want to consider volunteering at a local shelter for homeless animals. National Mutt Day is a good reason to get motivated to help those mutts find their forever families!
